Despite improvements in the past few decades with surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, a predictably curative treatment for glioma does not yet exist. New insights into specific gene mutations that arise in this often deadly form of brain cancer have pointed to the potential of gene therapy, but it's very difficult to effectively deliver toxic or missing genes to cancer cells in the brain.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the outbreak of Ebola in four West African countries is one of the largest outbreaks of the disease in history.
Andrew Tsin, professor of biology in the UTSA College of Sciences, has been named a Gold Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthamology for his dedication and exemplary contributions in the field. Tsin will receive the honor at the 2015 ARVO Annual Meeting, May 3-7 in Denver.
Incyte Corporation today announced that its strategic collaborator, Novartis, received approval from the European Commission for Jakavi (INC424, ruxolitinib), an oral JAK 1 and JAK 2 inhibitor discovered by Incyte, for the treatment of disease-related splenomegaly or symptoms in adult patients with primary myelofibrosis (also known as chronic idiopathic myelofibrosis), post-polycythemia vera myelofibrosis or post-essential thrombocythemia myelofibrosis.
