With the spread of COVID-19, scientists are finding out more about the disease. One major aspect that is being studied is how the virus affects children. Severe infection can also occur among children, requiring hospitalization and intensive care.
The Ontario Medical Association (OMA) today announced the launch of a wholly-owned, not-for-profit corporation dedicated to improving the quality of healthcare services, the Institute for Quality Management in Healthcare (IQMH).
According two studies in Africa, taking a daily pill containing either one or two anti-HIV drugs can reduce transmission of the virus by as much as three-quarters among heterosexual couples. This is an encouraging finding that could help focus on AIDS prevention. The results were so compelling that the larger study was halted early and the drugs given to all the participants, researchers said Wednesday.
More than one-third of teenagers with treatment-resistant depression - many of whom had been depressed for more than two years - became symptom-free six months after switching their medication or combining a medicine switch with cognitive behavioral therapy during a multicenter study led by UT Southwestern Medical Center researchers.
In follow-up coverage of the WHO's announcement Wednesday of a plan to contain the spread of artemisinin-resistant malaria, news outlets examined the scope of the problem, reactions to the plan and speculations of how the anticipated $175 million annual cost would be funded.
