As an example of how the normally sclerotic Congress can act extremely quickly when properly motivated, both chambers passed bills this week to ameliorate the Veterans Affairs health services scandal.
Sermo, the world's largest online community for physicians, today announced its weekly hot topic. More than 500 physicians participated in a Sermo post "FTC - Refusal to accept Medicare pricing = Price Fixing." The discussion focuses on a complaint from the FTC that the Roaring Fork Valley Physicians IPA, by refusing to accept Medicare price controls, violated anti-trust laws. The announcement prompted strong reaction among many physicians who argue they should be able to accept or decline payment terms, like any other profession.
"With the health care debate headed toward a showdown on Capitol Hill, the battle is being joined locally at street rallies, in television ads and through phone banks. Members of Congress, particularly Democratic moderates such as Rep. Bob Etheridge, are facing stepped-up lobbying efforts as President Barack Obama makes a final push for passage of a bill aimed to change the health care system. At the same time, conservative critics are waging a last effort to derail the bill" (Christensen, 3/12).
Particular eating behaviors may lower the risk of developing non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), according to research presented this week at The Liver Meeting — held by the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases.
