The team led by Liliana Attisano, Professor in U of T's Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research, has identified a protein called NUAK2, which is produced by cancer cells to boost their proliferation and whose presence in tumors is associated with poor disease prognosis.
Today we know the function and metabolism of any mammalian cell depends on its environment. Such cells have long been cultured under conditions consisting of a basal medium with added nutritional serum. This, however, is not an accurate replica of the cell's environment within the human body.
Sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, is a potentially serious condition because it deprives the body of oxygen. It becomes an even more serious condition in pregnant women—who can be more prone to it—because the oxygen deprivation may affect the baby.
