A recent journal article presents evidence that suggests that the course of treatment that a doctor chooses to treat a breast cancer patient may play a larger role in expected outcomes than was previously believed. The Journal of the National Cancer Institute's article (online 01/03/2011; print 01/19/2011) Breast Cancer Outcome: Your Doctor Matters examines variations in outcomes from surgeon to surgeon.
In an effort to identify a simple, reliable way to track the course of nasal polyps in chronic sinus disease, Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers say they've linked rising levels of immune system white blood cells, called eosinophils, with regrowth of polyps removed by surgery.
A new study reports that colonoscopies done with suboptimal bowel preparation are associated with relatively high adenoma (precancerous polyp) miss rates, suggesting that suboptimal bowel preparation substantially decreases colonoscopy effectiveness and may mandate an early follow-up examination.
