A Geographic Information System (GIS)-driven digital map of past and predicted malaria outbreak hotspots has been used in India as part of a national control program.
The University of Minnesota's Clinical and Translational Science Institute received more than $42 million in renewed National Institutes of Health funding through the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences' Clinical and Translational Science Award program.
The finding by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that an enzyme known as cathepsin G regulates the ability of immune cells known as neutrophils to secrete chemicals that attract other immune cells and start the local inflammatory process. Over time, the excessive accumulation of immune cells can lead to tissue and cartilage damage in joints, causing pain and limiting mobility.
A study published in BMJ has revealed a link between the risk of prostate cancer and men who have become fathers via assisted reproduction techniques.
After a heart attack, the cells in the heart muscle cannot get enough nutrients and oxygen to survive, so they die. A structural support network in the heart's wall can help those cells regenerate, however, two enzymes that break down the network are naturally increased after a heart attack, leaving the heart in a fight for its life.
