The most dangerous malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, is responsible for nearly half a million deaths annually across Africa and Southeast Asia. Of increasing concern, this parasite is now developing resistance to common antimalarial drugs.
Using inpatient data from an urban teaching hospital, we examined how elements of individual characteristics and neighborhood socioeconomic status influenced the likelihood of readmission ... Patients living in high-poverty neighborhoods were 24 percent more likely than others to be readmitted, after demographic characteristics and clinical conditions were adjusted for. Married patients were at significantly reduced risk of readmission, which suggests that they had more social support than unmarried patients. These and previous findings that document socioeconomic disparities in readmission raise the question of whether CMS's readmission measures and associated financial penalties should be adjusted for the effects of factors beyond hospital influence at the individual or neighborhood level, such as poverty and lack of social support (Hu, Gonsahn and Nerenz, May 2014).
Now, a team of researchers from the Netherlands and Sweden demonstrates that airborne spread via infectious droplets or aerosols over longer distances of more than 1.5 meters due to singing is possible during singing events.
The global CT market is expected to grow 5.5 percent to $5.1 billion in 2018, according to a new Kalorama Information report. The combination of product enhancements and the need to cut radiation dose levels is fueling the market. A new federal standard passed into law last year, NEMA Standard XR-29, defining low dose standards and punishing providers not in compliance will help growth, according to the market research publisher.
Globally, pneumonia and diarrhea together led to nearly one of every four deaths that occurred in children under five years of age in 2016.
