Between the flap at the Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the squall about the Obama administration's directive that health insurance plans cover the cost of birth control, contraception is shaping up as one of the year's biggest political land mines.

Under state law, residents who qualify for MassHealth benefits can hire a personal care attendant, or PCA, to help with daily tasks. They can choose a stranger, a sister, an uncle or most any other family member, but not their spouse. A bill in the Legislature would change that (Bever, 7/9).
A Dutch biotechnology manufacturer says it has identified a human antibody which has proven effective against West Nile virus in animal studies.
The rate of workplace deaths in Michigan remained steady in 2011, as 141 workers died on the job compared with 145 in 2010, according to an annual report from Michigan State University.
