A recent study, led by Ryan P. Duncan of Washington University at St. Louis, suggested patients with Parkinson's disease who suffer from freezing episodes are more likely to have impaired balance than those who do not. This is an important discovery as Parkinson's disease typically develops in elderly patients, who cannot afford to be unstable, lose balance and potentially fall, which could result in major injuries.
New research demonstrates that the cellular metabolism of certain immune cells is closely linked to their function, which includes protecting against viral infections and the development of tumours.
Scientists have long believed that healthy brain cells, once damaged by radiation designed to kill brain tumors, cannot regenerate. But new Johns Hopkins research in mice suggests that neural stem cells, the body's source of new brain cells, are resistant to radiation, and can be roused from a hibernation-like state to reproduce and generate new cells able to migrate, replace injured cells and potentially restore lost function.
Medical researchers from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) presented new research results at the American Heart Association International Stroke Conference that demonstrated how MultiStem-, a novel stem cell therapy being developed by Athersys, Inc. provided multiple benefits when administered in preclinical models of ischemic stroke.
