Each day, 80 people are newly diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD) in the UK and one in 20 will be under the age of 40.
The antidiabetic medication metformin is associated with a reduced risk of pancreatic cancer in diabetics, according to a new study in Gastroenterology, the official journal of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute. However, other commonly used therapies, such as insulin or insulin secretagogues, may be associated with increased risk for the deadly disease.
Buck Institute professors Judith Campisi, PhD and Lisa Ellerby PhD, have been awarded a $14.3 million grant from the NIH's National Institute of Aging to study cellular senescence, one of the major hallmarks of aging, as a driver of Alzheimer's disease and other age-related dementias.
British researchers say a new blood test which is able to detect signs of breast cancer four years earlier than it would be picked up by a standard mammogram, could be available within months.
Individuals who were obese at midlife had an increased risk for dementia later in life compared to individuals of normal weight, according to an article in the October issue of Archives of Neurology.
