A major study on whether vitamin E and selenium prevent prostate cancer has been stopped because the supplements are not effective and also because there is a suspicion of a risk.
Charles River Laboratories International, Inc. today reported its results for the second quarter of 2010. For the quarter, net sales were $292.1 million, a decline of 5.2% from $308.2 million in the second quarter of 2009. Foreign currency translation reduced the sales growth rate by 0.1%. A modest sales increase in the Research Models and Services segment was offset by lower sales for the Preclinical Services segment.
In countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea, heart disease is less common than in the United States. Researchers believe that foods common to Greece and southern Italy are a major reason for this difference.
Researchers at the University of Cincinnati have discovered that a human cancer-causing gene, called DEK, can be detected in the plasma of head and neck cancer patients. DEK may help doctors understand how a person's immune system could be used to treat cancer or predict outcomes for patients.
