St. Jude Medical, Inc., a global medical device company, today announced it has received U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance and will immediately launch the AMPLATZER Vascular Plug 4 (AVP 4) for use in transcatheter embolization procedures (minimally invasive procedures that involve the selective blocking of blood vessels) within the peripheral vasculature.
An investigation undertaken by Novozymes Biopharma DK has shown that when the corticosteroid dexamethasone is formulated in a cross-linked Hyaluronic acid (HA) hydrogel, the drug's in vitro release time increases from under 10 minutes to approximately 15 hours. In addition, the in vivo half-life of dexamethasone is shown to plateau with stable dexamethasone concentration up to four hours after injection.
A new study from the University of East Anglia and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital may lead to people being able to test for prostate cancer from home, using urine samples. The study, which was published in the journal BioTechniques, describes a simple home urine collection test which can detect aggressive prostate cancer, and providing information on whether it requires to be treated, up to 5 years earlier than the comparable diagnostic methods of today.
One of the latest attempts to boost the body's defenses against cancer is called adoptive cell transfer, in which patients receive a therapeutic injection of their own immune cells. This therapy, currently tested in early clinical trials for melanoma and neuroblastoma, has its limitations: Removing immune cells from a patient and growing them outside the body for future re-injection is extremely expensive and not always technically feasible.
