A Purdue University-led team of researchers studying the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, or MERS, have found molecules that shut down the activity of an essential enzyme in the virus and could lead the way to better treatments for those infected.
The Sweden-based biotech company Biovator and the global chemical industry leader BASF have signed a collaboration agreement for final development of In Vitro test systems capable of identifying the potential of chemical compounds to induce allergic reaction in humans. The agreement also includes a five-year BASF option of final product deliveries.
The 2010 Gout Attitudes Patient Survey, a new study of Americans with gout, released by Men's Health Network, sheds light on the painful reality of what life is like for the approximately five million Americans who live with this condition. Of those surveyed, 69 percent described the pain of a gout attack as "miserable," yet a quarter of gout patients feel that those without gout perceive them as overreacting to attacks, and 67 percent feel as though others do not take the condition seriously.
The EU-funded project ARISE is trialing a novel type of graft for the replacement of aortic valves: it is using donated human heart valves that have been stripped of the donor's cells to appease the recipient's immune system.
