A new issue brief from the Center for State and Local Government Excellence takes a hard look at the options state and local governments are pursuing to reduce their unfunded liabilities for retiree health care.

Although a relatively common infection, some bacteria that causes pneumonia can be particularly deadly. As a case in point, take Klebsiella pneumoniae, which has been included on the World Health Organisation's (WHO) list of infections that desperately need new treatments.
In this PLoS "Speaking of Medicine" blog post, Julien Potet and Katy Athersuch of Medecins Sans Frontieres' (MSF) Access Campaign say that the WHO's decision last week to "simply continue monitoring" the medical research and development (R&D) industry's ability to address the needs of people living in developing countries "by creating a global R&D 'observatory'" is "a deeply disappointing outcome that will not help re-shape priorities, increase funding or catalyze development of urgently needed new medical tools; at best it will only underscore further how badly these actions are needed."
A burger chain pays more for employees' health care insurance and, in turn, has reaped significant gains. The Wall Street Journal reports: "Four years ago, executives of Burgerville, a regional restaurant chain, agreed to pay at least 90% of health-care premiums for hourly employees who work at least 20 hours a week."
