While The Hill reports that CMS administrator Donald Berwick says his agency is trying to help states find solutions, National Journal notes that mounting budgetary pressure has put the program in "dire fiscal straits."
Better health in midlife might be a matter of degrees. According to a study led by Dr. Katrina Walsemann of the University of South Carolina's Arnold School of Public Health, attaining at least a bachelor's degree after 25 years of age is associated with better midlife health.
Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have found that an approved drug for treating rheumatoid arthritis reduces severe illness and death in mice exposed to the Influenza A virus. Their findings suggest that tempering the response of the body's immune system to influenza infection may alleviate some of the more severe symptoms and even reduce mortality from this virus.
Children's rights advocates are demanding an independent review of a New York city agency's program which subjected more than 400 HIV-positive foster children to clinical trials for AIDS drugs after children's rights advocates said it amounted to exploitation.
