Improperly formed proteins can cause a host of serious illnesses, from muscular dystrophy to cystic fibrosis. Today Novartis announced that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Amturnide (aliskiren, amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide) tablets for the treatment of high blood pressure. Amturnide combines the only approved direct renin inhibitor worldwide, Tekturna (aliskiren), with the widely used calcium channel blocker amlodipine and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ).
Understanding how any disease progresses is one of the first and most important steps towards finding treatments to stop it. This has been the case for such brain-degenerating conditions as Alzheimer's disease. Now, after several years of incremental study, researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania have been able to piece together important steps in how Parkinson's disease (PD) spreads from cell to cell and leads to nerve cell death.
Today, Siemens Healthcare announced it has renewed its strategic alliance with NextGen Healthcare Information Systems to deliver innovative ambulatory information technology (IT) solutions. More than 35 Siemens customers have already deployed NextGen Healthcare's ambulatory IT tools throughout their physician networks as a result of the relationship, formed to offer healthcare providers interoperable solutions that cross the care coordination gap between the acute and ambulatory environments.
