Postmenopausal women who use antidepressant medication or suffer from depression might be more likely to have a higher body mass index, larger waist circumference and inflammation-all associated with increased risk for diabetes and cardiovascular disease, according to a study led by University of Massachusetts Medical School investigator Yunsheng Ma, PhD, MD, MPH, and published in the June 13 issue of the American Journal of Public Health.
"It's not much of a surprise that Monday night's presidential debate, which focused on foreign policy, was consumed by a discussion of defense spending, and security and trade policies," but "it's still disappointing that both President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Gov. Mitt Romney were relatively silent on issues like global health, research, and international aid," Global Health Technologies Coalition (GHTC) Communications Officer Kim Lufkin writes in the GHTC's "Breakthroughs" blog.
A cluster of children from Colorado in the USA have been treated for muscle weakness or paralysis that may be connected to a nationwide outbreak of a usually rare respiratory virus called enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses.
Senate Finance Committee ranking member Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) on Thursday at the Kaiser Family Foundation told reporters that although congressional Democrats and Republicans likely will not reach an agreement on health care reform legislation with a provision that would establish a public health plan to compete with private plans, he could not dismiss the possibility, the Wall Street Journal reports (Yoest, Wall Street Journal, 3/19).
