Cancer treatments are on track to become the biggest driver of specialty pharmacy spending as its contribution to overall drug spending hit five percent for the first time in the first half of 2009, according to Medco Health Solutions, Inc.
Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) announced today its was awarded a follow-on task order by the National Institutes of Health to provide software and technical support to the Center for Scientific Review (CSR). The indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity task order has a six month base period of performance, 9 six-month options and a total contract ceiling of more than $24 million if all options are exercised. Work will be performed in Bethesda, Md. The task order was awarded under NIH's Chief Information Officer-Solutions and Partners (CIO-SP2) contract.
Patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery who are treated with methadone during the procedure require significantly less intravenous and oral opioids to manage postoperative pain, reports a new study published in the May issue of Anesthesiology, the peer-reviewed medical journal of the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
A major international randomized clinical trial has found that HIV-infected individuals have a considerably lower risk of developing AIDS or other serious illnesses if they start taking antiretroviral drugs sooner, when their CD4+ T-cell count-a key measure of immune system health-is higher, instead of waiting until the CD4+ cell count drops to lower levels. Together with data from previous studies showing that antiretroviral treatment reduced the risk of HIV transmission to uninfected sexual partners, these findings support offering treatment to everyone with HIV.
