The community of beneficial bacteria that live in our intestines, known as the gut microbiome, are important for the development and function of the immune system. There has been growing evidence that certain probiotics-therapies that introduce beneficial bacteria into the gut-may help alleviate some of the symptoms of intestinal disorders such as Crohn's disease.
Northwestern University scientists have received two awards totaling nearly $18 million for Parkinson's disease research from The ASAP Collaborative Research Network, a program of the Aligning Science Across Parkinson's (ASAP) initiative being implemented through The Michael J. Fox Foundation.
In the first nine months of the financial year (December 2008 - August 2009), Gerresheimer AG achieved sales of EUR 744.3m (prior year EUR 783.4m). Excluding the Technical Plastics business which has been sold, sales totaled EUR 714.9m, a reduction of 1.7% compared with the prior year. The corresponding operating margin (adjusted EBITDA) for the first three quarters continued on a high level at 17.9%.
EpiCept Corporation announced today that EpiCeptTM NP-1 has been granted orphan drug designation by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN). NP-1 is a prescription topical analgesic cream designed to provide long-term relief from the pain of peripheral neuropathies.
