If doctors could put people in hibernation and pull them out at will, scientists think they could minimize damage from strokes, help recipients' bodies accept transplanted organs, perhaps even enable astronauts to travel in suspended animation until reaching distant destinations.
Joint damage caused by rheumatoid arthritis can lead to difficulties in typing and can force people to seek alternative—but potentially more destructive—ways of putting their fingers to the keyboard, according to research presented this week at the American College of Rheumatology Annual Scientific Meeting in Atlanta.
An Economist editorial examines the relief and recovery efforts in Haiti and the "vital" importance of planning for rebuilding the country "before the world's generosity turns to cynicism. Fortunately there is a blueprint, drawn up by Haiti's government and presented to donors last year. It calls for investment to be targeted on infrastructure, basic services and combating soil erosion to make farmers more productive and the country less vulnerable to hurricanes. The pressing question is who should do it and how."
