Inherited mutations in voltage-gated sodium channels (Navs) are associated with many different human diseases, including genetic forms of epilepsy and chronic pain. Theodore Cummins and colleagues, at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, have now determined the functional consequence of three such mutations.
The Boston Globe: The town budget in Framingham, Mass. is strained, leading to layoffs and other cuts. "Everyone here seems to agree that a major factor is the rising cost of health care insurance for employees and retirees, which has jumped by $20 million in 10 years." The town picks up 87 percent of the premiums for most public employees and retirees, as negotiated through collective bargaining.
Cellectis bioresearch, the genome customization specialist and a commercial subsidiary of Cellectis, and Lonza, a world leader in biotechnology production, announce today that they have reached a significant milestone in the development of a newly bioengineered cell line.
"This is the first study to investigate whether chocolate has any favorable effects on cardiovascular function in healthy subjects," says Charalambos Vlachopoulos, MD, of the Athens Medical School, Athens, Greece. "We found dark chocolate improves endothelial function and decreases arterial stiffness in healthy young adults."
FDA has issued a revised guidance to help drugmakers determine how they should report postapproval manufacturing changes to new drug applications (NDAs) or abbreviated new drug applications (ANDAs).
