While carotid endarterectomy (CEA) is performed to prevent stroke, long-term survival is essential to ensure benefit, especially in asymptomatic patients. A new study presented at the 66th Vascular Annual Meeting presented by the Society for Vascular Surgery today examined patient factors associated with 5-year survival following CEA in patients with asymptomatic internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis.
High blood glucose is associated with poor outcomes in hospitalized patients, and use of intensive insulin therapy (IIT) to control hyperglycemia is a common practice in hospitals. But the recent evidence does not show a consistent benefit and even shows harms associated with the use of IIT, according to the American College of Physicians' (ACP) Clinical Guidelines Committee in a new evidence-based paper published today online in the American Journal of Medical Quality.
Lung cancer is one of the developed world's biggest cancer killers; it causes 33,000 deaths each year in Britain, claims the lives of 7,000 Australians each year and in 2007 it is estimated that 160,390 Americans will die from the disease.
Kaiser Health News staff writers Andrew Villegas and Mary Agnes Carey, working in collaboration with The Washington Post, talked with the AMA president about action surrounding Medicare payment issues: "While most people are focused on the midterm elections Tuesday, the American Medical Association is gearing up for the lame-duck congressional session scheduled to start Nov. 15.
Kansas lawmakers on Wednesday announced that they plan to hold hearings to examine a decision made by the administration of Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D), whom President Obama has nominated as HHS secretary, to increase state payments to a social services group whose board of directors included members with close ties to the governor, the AP/Kansas City Star reports.
