The first new TB vaccine for more than 80 years has successfully come through safety trials in the UK. The vaccine, devised by a team led by Dr Helen McShane in Oxford's Centre for Clinical Vaccinology and Tropical Medicine (CCVTM), is designed to be used in tandem with the tried and tested BCG inoculation – first introduced in 1921 – and not to replace it.
Teenager Andrew Allan died hours after being sent home from Northam Hospital, Western Australia (WA) with some Paracetamol by a nurse on the 17th September. He was ill with fever and vomiting but was not assessed by a doctor. Health officials now believe his illness was due to swine flu and are urging people to get vaccinated. Nine people have died from swine flu in WA this year.
Amarillo Biosciences, Inc. (OTCBB: AMAR) today announced that a Phase 2 study of orally administered interferon-alpha for the prevention of influenza and winter colds has reached the midway point. The study in Perth, Australia achieved full target enrollment of 200 subjects and 98% of the subjects remain on study drug. Subjects in the study are receiving a lozenge containing interferon-alpha or a matching placebo once a day for 16 weeks.
The researchers however believe the positive effects of the drug may be as a result of its impact on two bacteria - Chlamydophila pneumoniae and Mycoplasma pneumoniae - found present in 61% of patients in the study.
