Researchers use diabetes drug to permanently reprogram insulin-producing cells

Pediatric researchers who tested newborn animals with an existing human drug used in adults with diabetes report that this drug, when given very early in life, prevents diabetes from developing in adult animals. If this finding can be repeated in humans, it may become a way to prevent at-risk infants from developing type 2 diabetes.

Research shows it is possible to freeze embryos and reduce multiple pregnancies in PGD cycles without adversely affecting pregnancy rates

Transferring just one embryo at a time to a woman's womb after embryos have undergone preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) and freezing at the blastocyst stage has become a real option after researchers achieved pregnancy rates that were as good as those for blastocysts that had not had a cell removed for PGD before freezing. Their results mean that it will be possible to reduce the number of multiple pregnancies after PGD and the consequent complications associated with these pregnancies.

Many breast cancer patients use cannabis without the knowledge of physicians

New research indicates that almost half of U.S. adults with breast cancer use cannabis (marijuana and hemp), most commonly alongside cancer treatment to manage symptoms and side effects.

Health insurance made available to contractors, entrepreneurs and job seekers: oDesk

Contract workers now make up more than one-third of the U.S. workforce, and their ranks are growing at twice the rate of those that are traditionally employed. While contract work gives people the freedom to work when and where they want, it rarely comes with important employer benefits like health insurance. Starting today, oDesk, which connects employers with contractors globally, is making health insurance available to contractors, entrepreneurs, job seekers and anybody looking for an alternative to expiring COBRA benefits or costly individual plans.

RMEI, PIM sponsor continuing education series on castration-resistant prostate cancer

Castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC), defined as tumor progression despite castrate levels of testosterone, develops in many prostate cancer patients treated with androgen-deprivation therapy. Current treatment regimens are complicated by toxicities and a low rate of relapse-free survival. Many novel therapies in clinical trials offer hope for patients with this challenging diagnosis. Healthcare professionals who are treating CRPC must stay abreast of these emerging therapies to ensure optimal care for these patients.
