Ramipril, a high blood pressure and heart failure drug, can reduce the rate of sudden cardiac death and nonfatal cardiac arrest by 21 percent in people at high risk for heart attack or stroke, according to a study reported in Circulation: Journal of the American Heart Association.
The U.N.'s Pan-American Health Organization, the United States and the international community "should be working with the Haitian Health Ministry to wage a more aggressive and effective effort" against the cholera epidemic that hit the country last year, and those efforts "should include not only clean water and sanitation systems but more antibiotics and cholera vaccinations," a New York Times editorial says.
Consumption of cocoa may improve walking performance for patients with peripheral artery disease, according to the results of a small, preliminary, phase II research trial published today in the American Heart Association's journal Circulation Research.
Noting U.N. peacekeepers played a role in bringing cholera to Haiti, Victoria Fan, a research fellow at the Center for Global Development (CGD), writes in the group's "Global Health Policy" blog, "Blame aside, there are undoubtedly lessons to be learned by looking back at how this epidemic came to pass in Haiti. More importantly, looking ahead there are key steps that should be taken to eliminate cholera in Haiti."
