AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) today criticized the Obama administration, which—in a shocking repudiation of nearly thirty years of progress against the global AIDS pandemic—last Monday unveiled a global AIDS budget that takes the unprecedented step of reducing AIDS funding by approximately $214 million in fiscal year 2013. Never before has a President sought to actually reduce America's commitment to fighting the AIDS epidemic globally.
A new federal regulation issued by Medicare in November will create a crisis for approximately 4.5 million home health and hospice service patients. Starting on January 1, homebound elderly and disabled patients as well as hospice patients will now need to have a "face-to-face encounter" with a physician or nurse practitioner if they want to receive care under Medicare.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard has called forth the opposition to explain "what understandings" there were between the Liberal Party and the tobacco industry after revelations of a $5 million industry-funded advertising campaign against the Labor Party with the help of Liberals. The tobacco giants are unhappy with Labor's plan to push for plain packaging for tobacco. The federal government earlier this year announced that it wanted cigarettes to be sold in plain packaging, without brand logos, images and colours, from 2012.
LUMEDX Corporation, a leading provider of vendor-neutral cardiovascular imaging and information systems, announced today that it has contracted to provide Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital with a comprehensive CVIS that will integrate patient data and images across five different sites. The LUMEDX CVIS will consolidate data, improve physician access to patient information, streamline clinical workflows, and support outcomes analysis and registry reporting for the Phoebe Heart and Vascular Center.
COPD is defined as a preventable and treatable disease associated with significant extrapulmonary consequences that may contribute to severity. The pulmonary component of COPD is characterised by airflow limitation that is not fully reversible. The airflow limitation is usually progressive with an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to noxious particles (GOLD Strategy Document). Airflow obstruction in COPD is not highly variable and largely irreversible.
