Within the past few years, a new technology has made altering genes in plants and animals much easier than before. The tool, called CRISPR/Cas9 or just CRISPR, has spurred a flurry of research that could one day lead to hardier crops and livestock, as well as innovative biomedicines. But along with potential benefits, it raises red flags, according to an article in Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society.
Boehringer Ingelheim Ltd. today announces that Health Canada has granted approval of PRADAX (dabigatran etexilate), an oral anticoagulant for the prevention of stroke and systemic embolism in adults with atrial fibrillation in whom anticoagulation is appropriate. PRADAX is the first innovative drug approved in Canada in more than two decades to reduce the risk of stroke in Canadians with atrial fibrillation.
Buoyed by the chance for a fresh start in the New Year, an overwhelming majority of Americans are hopeful for a renewed commitment to fitness in 2011, according to a national omnibus survey conducted by 24 Hour Fitness. 24 Hour Fitness, the largest privately-owned U.S. fitness club chain and a leading health club industry pioneer, recently commissioned the study to measure consumer attitudes about exercise and the obstacles that most often prevent people from pursuing a fit lifestyle.
"Senior United Nations officials on Tuesday made impassioned appeals to the international community to make more resources available to assist millions of people affected by the severe food and nutrition crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa, cautioning that global inaction could lead to a humanitarian disaster," the U.N. News Centre reports.
