The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved a drug to help ease the suffering faced by those with certain chronic inflammatory diseases.
Research led by physician-scientists at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has produced a breakthrough discovery in diagnosing retinitis pigmentosa, a blinding disease that affects about 1 in 4,000 people in the U.S.
It takes a surprisingly small cluster of brain cells deep within the cerebellum to learn how to serve a tennis ball or line up a hockey shot. Researchers at McGill University led by Kathleen Cullen from the Department of Physiology have discovered that to learn new motor skills, neurons within the cerebellum engage in elegant, virtually mathematical, computations to quickly compare expected and actual sensory feedback. They then quickly readjust, changing the strength of connections between other neurons to form new patterns in the brain in order to accomplish the task at hand.
Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) is a proven therapy indicated for patients with moderate to severe heart failure. Additional 24-month clinical data presented today on the European cohort of 262 patients in the REVERSE (Resynchronization Reverse Remodeling in Systolic Left Ventricular Dysfunction) trial, sponsored by Medtronic, Inc., provides a deeper understanding of how CRT improves the function of the heart, including reduction in heart size and improvements in pumping efficiency, in certain heart failure patients with mild symptoms.
