Considering how many microorganisms we ingest each day, our gut has an extensive and well-developed immune system. EPFL scientists have found that gut immunity is not affected by single genes but by entire groups of genes.
Approximately five to ten percent of patients with primary or metastatic cancer suffer from devastating neurological complications such as headaches, seizures, confusion, difficulty swallowing and visual disturbances. These deficits are caused by a life-threatening form of brain invasion from cancer called neoplastic meningitis.
Research suggests that the persistent cognitive defects seen in children with congenital hypothyroidism, despite optimal care, are associated with altered cortical thickness.
An expert in cancer proteomics at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center has received $4.8 million in federal stimulus funding from the National Cancer Institute to co-lead a pilot study to assess the feasibility and scalability of a project that aims to measure all of the proteins in the human body.
Cedars-Sinai has launched an initiative to accelerate the development of novel drugs, devices and therapies aimed at improving treatments for patients with gastrointestinal and metabolic diseases.
