Rochester Institute of Technology received a three-year, $374,949 grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for faculty-researcher Rubén Proaño to study and help design a coordinated decision-support system for the global procurement of vaccines.
A team from the Broad Institute, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Santa Cruz, was awarded one of three National Cancer Institute Cancer Genomics Cloud Pilot contracts with the goal of building a system that will enable large-scale analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas and other datasets by co-locating the data and the required computing resources in one cloud environment.
Cancer Treatment Centers of America has been recognized by the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition with the organization's "Clinical Nutrition Team of Distinction Award". Members of the CTCA professional staff will be honored by A.S.P.E.N at its Clinical Nutrition Week Conference in Savannah, GA this January 2014. This award is presented to multi-discipline clinical teams that exemplify excellence in interdisciplinary clinical nutrition practice in compliance with A.S.P.E.N. standards, guidelines and values.
In early results of a large-scale randomized study published in 2010 and led by researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, giving daily antiretroviral drugs (ART) to HIV-infected moms or their breastfeeding babies for 28 weeks proved safe and effective for preventing mother-to-child HIV transmission through breast milk.
