The National Association of Insurance Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to approve a guideline for what insurers can count as medical costs - as opposed to administrative expenses - under new health law rules, Politico reports. The health law requires large group insurance plans to spend at least 85 percent of premiums on medical expenses. Small group plans must spend 80 percent.
UnitedHealth attributed a 14 percent drop in profits in the first quarter to higher medical costs. The nation's largest insurer also warned that cuts to Medicare Advantage plans could hamper its earnings growth next year.
GlaxoSmithKline has announced today that it has extended its previously announced tender offer to purchase all of the outstanding shares of common stock of Genelabs Technologies, Inc. for $1.30 in cash per share without interest and less any required withholding taxes, until 12:00 midnight EST on Friday, December 12, 2008, unless the tender offer is further extended.
