Researchers at University of California San Diego School of Medicine have demonstrated that distinct types of glioblastoma, the most common form of brain cancer in adults, tend to develop in different regions of the brain. This finding provides an explanation for how the same cancer-causing mutation can give rise to different types of brain malignancies.
After a transplant - and to assure that the new organ is not rejected - patients are put on life-long therapy to suppress their immune system, which, nevertheless, needs to be left intact enough to be able to defend the body against all kinds of disease. A tricky balance as the many rejected organs attest. But a discovery by Maria Monteiro and Luis Graça, two Portuguese scientists, could change all this, at least for the liver.
Improving on traditional screening tests for potential anti-cancer drugs, scientists at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have developed a laboratory technique that more closely simulates the real-world conditions in which tumor cells mingle with the body's normal cells.
One of the most striking changes in health care over the last two decades has been a dramatic increase in physicians categorized as "hospitalists" - doctors who practice almost exclusively in hospitals, rather than combining both outpatient and inpatient care.
The DECREASE III Study which took place in the Netherlands between June 2004 and April 2008, showed that patients treated with Fluvastatin showed an improved cardiac outcome after surgery.
