In the first use of a framework allowing submission of a single application to the two agencies, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) worked together to allow drug companies to submit the results of seven new tests that evaluate kidney damage during animal studies of new drugs. The tests measure the levels of seven key proteins or "biomarkers" found in urine that can provide additional information about drug-induced damage to kidney cells, also known as renal toxicity.
StemCells, Inc. (NASDAQ:STEM) announced today that it will soon initiate with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Children's Hospital a Phase I clinical trial to evaluate the therapeutic potential of StemCells' proprietary HuCNS-SC® product candidate (purified human neural stem cells) to treat Pelizaeus-Merzbacher Disease (PMD), a myelination disorder that primarily affects infants and young children.
The result of some elements of the health law that were initially viewed as victories are now not so clear-cut.
AIDS Healthcare Foundation, the largest global AIDS organization, is spearheading a series of US and global protests targeting the Government of the People's Republic of China to demand that it step up its commitment on global AIDS and pledge one billion dollars to Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB, and Malaria.
