Responding to a survey published by the University of Warwick which found that 40 percent of GPs intend to quit general practice in the next five years amid growing workload pressures, BMA GP committee chair, Dr Richard Vautrey, said: This is yet another worrying report about the state of the GP workforce crisis and these findings are consistent with other surveys which give rise to growing concerns for practices and their patients.
A high prevalence of frailty among patients starting dialysis may help to explain why early dialysis initiation in chronic kidney disease is associated with a reported increase in mortality, say US researchers.
Before people develop type 2 diabetes, they almost always have "prediabetes," defined as blood glucose levels that are higher than normal but not yet high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes. There are 79 million people in the United States who have prediabetes. Recent research has shown that even during prediabetes both heart and circulatory long-term damage to the body may already be occurring.
A team led by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) has received a grant of more than $13 million from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease of the National Institutes of Health to study antibodies to the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-which will play an essential role in the creation of any effective vaccine against HIV.
A drug to stop bleeding during a brain injury and a mattress that will prevent bedsores are among the scientific discoveries at NJIT that received earlier this week more than a million dollars in funding from the New Jersey Commission on Science and Technology. The discoveries are the work of five early stage companies based at NJIT's Enterprise Development Center (EDC), the state's oldest business incubator program.
