Researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine have uncovered genetic mutations that may explain why people with high levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, the "good cholesterol," have a reduced risk of coronary heart disease.
Obesity is a chronic metabolic disorder that affects half a billion people worldwide. Managing obesity is difficult, as many patients rebound to their pre-treatment weight. There is a hypothesis that chronic weight gain causes the body to adopt a state that supports excess weight.
Thousands of video game players have helped significantly advance our understanding of the genetic basis of diseases such as Alzheimer's, diabetes and cancer over the past year. They are the users of a web-based video game developed by Dr. J-r-me Waldispuhl of the McGill School of Computer Science and collaborator Mathieu Blanchette.
