An estimated 2.5 million Americans suffer from irregular heartbeats-also known as atrial fibrillation. Baylor Health Care System is raising awareness about this often misunderstood, but potentially life changing cardiovascular condition whose incidence is on the rise and expected to more than double by 2050.
Winner of the Louise Eisenhardt Traveling Scholarship, Sophia F. Shakur, MD, IFAANS, presented her research, Changes in Pulsatility and Resistance Indices of Cerebral Arteriovenous Malformation Feeder Arteries after Embolization and Surgery, during the 2016 American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Annual Scientific Meeting.
Ana Cores, a 54-year old Hackensack resident, worried about how a sudden loss of peripheral vision would impact the quality of her life. After undergoing MRIs, eye exams and many diagnostic tests, Cores opted to visit UMDNJ-The University Hospital where Dr. James K. Liu, a skull base neurosurgeon, and Dr. Jean Anderson Eloy, an otolaryngologist, used a new three- dimensional endoscope to remove a brain tumor through her nose that was pressing on her optic nerve and causing her to go blind.
UT Southwestern Medical Center scientists have identified a strong link between the most aggressive type of breast cancer and a gene that regulates the body's natural cellular recycling process, called autophagy.
