In the first evolutionary study of the chromosome associated with being female, University of California, Berkeley, biologist Doris Bachtrog and her colleagues show that the history of the X chromosome is every bit as interesting as the much-studied, male-determining Y chromosome, and offers important clues to the origins and benefits of sexual reproduction.
NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. today announced the closing of a public offering of 7,912,000 shares of its common stock, including 1,032,000 shares sold pursuant to the full exercise of an overallotment option previously granted to the underwriters. Net proceeds were approximately $44.4 million after deducting underwriting discounts and estimated offering expenses. Jefferies & Company, Inc. acted as the sole book-running manager and Canaccord Genuity Inc. acted as co-lead manager for the offering.

Although botulinum toxin A injections are U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved for preventive treatment for chronic migraines, a review and analysis of previous studies finds a small to modest benefit for patients with chronic migraine headaches and chronic daily headaches, although botox injections were not associated with greater benefit than placebo for preventing episodic migraine or chronic tension-type headaches, according to an article in the April 25 issue of JAMA.
