FDA approves NeurogesX's Qutenza patch for postherpetic neuralgia treatment

NeurogesX, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Qutenza(TM) (capsaicin) 8% patch, the first and only product containing prescription strength capsaicin, for the management of neuropathic pain due to postherpetic neuralgia (PHN), the nerve pain which can follow shingles.

BioSan announces precautionary voluntary recall over undeclared soy in Essentials, RightFoods products

BioSan Laboratories announced today a recall of products in its Essentials™ and RightFoods™ lines because they may contain undeclared soy. BioSan Laboratories has not received any reports of adverse or allergic reactions to these products. Although the levels of soy are low, people with soy allergies risk an allergic reaction if they consume these products.

Genzyme announces reopening of enrollment in its Pompe disease ATAP program

Genzyme Corporation announced today that it will reopen enrollment in the Alglucosidase Alfa Temporary Access Program (ATAP), a program which provides access to treatment for severely affected adults with Pompe disease prior to commercial approval of Lumizyme™ (alglucosidase alfa). Genzyme and the FDA have also agreed on a path toward approval of Lumizyme.

A nursing home (also called skilled nursing facility) is a facility or distinct part of an institution whose primary function is to provide medical, continuous nursing, and other health and social services to patients who are not in an acute phase of illness requiring services in a hospital, but who require primary restorative or skilled nursing services on an inpatient basis above the level of intermediate or custodial care in order to reach a degree of body functioning to permit self care in essential daily living.

A skilled nursing facility (SNF) may be a freestanding facility or part of a hospital that has been certified by Medicare to admit patients requiring subacute care and rehabilitation.
