Gray matter density increases during transition from childhood to young adulthood, study reveals

For years, the common narrative in human developmental neuroimaging has been that gray matter in the brain - the tissue found in regions of the brain responsible for muscle control, sensory perception such as seeing and hearing, memory, emotions, speech, decision making, and self-control - declines in adolescence, a finding derived mainly from studies of gray matter volume and cortical thickness (the thickness of the outer layers of brain that contain gray matter).

Results from Bionovo's study on BN107 published

Bionovo, Inc. announced today the publication of results from its study on the anti-tumor mechanism of BN107. The results of the study, published in the International Journal of Cancer, describe the potential molecular mechanisms mediating the selective pro-apoptotic (cell death) effect induced by BN107 on estrogen receptor negative (ER-) breast cancer cells.

Donald W. Reynolds Foundation grant supports aging-related curricula for doctors

Geriatrics is a medical specialty, but it is important for almost all doctors, whether they practice orthopedics, emergency medicine or psychiatry, to understand how healthy aging and its interaction with disease affects older patients. With a new grant announced June 7 by the Donald W. Reynolds Foundation, Dr. Richard Besdine and colleagues at the Brown University School of Public Health and Alpert Medical School will teach hundreds of residents and practicing physicians, such as hospitalists, about aging so they can further improve care.

MRI Patients in Canadian capital cities are getting the procedure sooner than regional areas

Patients in the Capital district who need an MRI are getting the procedure a lot sooner. The average wait time is now 45.2 days, almost three times less than the 148.2 days people were waiting last March. The wait time standard for elective MRI procedures is 42 days. Urgent or emergency MRIs are done immediately.

A nursing home (also called skilled nursing facility) is a facility or distinct part of an institution whose primary function is to provide medical, continuous nursing, and other health and social services to patients who are not in an acute phase of illness requiring services in a hospital, but who require primary restorative or skilled nursing services on an inpatient basis above the level of intermediate or custodial care in order to reach a degree of body functioning to permit self care in essential daily living.

A skilled nursing facility (SNF) may be a freestanding facility or part of a hospital that has been certified by Medicare to admit patients requiring subacute care and rehabilitation.
