ST Cardio Technologies, an innovative developer of products utilized in the diagnosis and treatment of heart arrhythmias, announced today that it has been awarded a grant of $244,479 under the Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Project (QTDP) Program. The company's grant is related to the development and clinical evaluation of the Z6 Cardiac Stimulator. The amount awarded to ST Cardio Technologies represents the maximum award for a grant under this program.

Novel assay can accurately detect prostate cancer than traditional screening

St. Petersburg Times examines decline in antipsychotic drug prescriptions for Florida children

St. Petersburg Times recently examined how since the Florida Medicaid program last year began requiring physicians to receive approval before prescribing antipsychotic drugs to children younger than age six, the number of prescriptions for children in that age group has dropped by nearly 75%, according to new data from the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration.

Study reveals that the pending health reforms bill will affect senior citizens in Wyoming

A new American Health Care Association analysis of the pending House health reform bill, combined with the impact of a recently-enacted Medicare regulation cutting Medicare-funded nursing home care by $12 billion over ten years, finds seniors in Wyoming requiring nursing and rehabilitative care will face total funding cuts of nearly $60 million over that same time period. Nationally, the study finds, seniors' Medicare cuts will total $44 billion over ten years, prompting Wyoming's long term care community to warn that seniors' care needs are endangered by the House bill, as are the jobs of caregivers and nursing home staff in Wyoming.

Nursing Home

A nursing home (also called skilled nursing facility) is a facility or distinct part of an institution whose primary function is to provide medical, continuous nursing, and other health and social services to patients who are not in an acute phase of illness requiring services in a hospital, but who require primary restorative or skilled nursing services on an inpatient basis above the level of intermediate or custodial care in order to reach a degree of body functioning to permit self care in essential daily living.

A skilled nursing facility (SNF) may be a freestanding facility or part of a hospital that has been certified by Medicare to admit patients requiring subacute care and rehabilitation.
