New study may help doctors to better treat children who cope with chronic pain

A new study describes the development of pediatric pain measures for a National Institutes of Health Initiative aimed at helping doctors better evaluate and therefore better treat children who cope with chronic pain. Based on face-to-face interviews with pediatric patients, the study better captured the young patient's perspective of living with chronic pain.

AFFiRiS AG receives 475,000 MJFF grant for Parkinson vaccine development

With a grant of USD 475,000, the Michael J. Fox Foundation is funding preclinical development of a vaccine against Parkinson's disease by AFFiRiS AG. The vaccine, known as PD01, targets the protein alpha-synuclein and might offer for the first time a possibility for a treatment that can slow or stop the progression of Parkinson's disease.

New contract agreement reached between Stanford Hospital & Clinics, Packard Children's hospital and the SEIU-UHW union

Lucile Packard Children's Hospital and Stanford Hospital & Clinics announce that the hospitals have reached a new contract agreement with employees represented by the SEIU United Healthcare Workers West (SEIU-UHW) union. The SEIU-UHW membership, which represents 1,450 out of 9,172 employees at the hospitals in jobs such as housekeeping, food service, nursing assistants, and technicians, ratified the contract in a vote Thursday, August 27.

Nursing Home

A nursing home (also called skilled nursing facility) is a facility or distinct part of an institution whose primary function is to provide medical, continuous nursing, and other health and social services to patients who are not in an acute phase of illness requiring services in a hospital, but who require primary restorative or skilled nursing services on an inpatient basis above the level of intermediate or custodial care in order to reach a degree of body functioning to permit self care in essential daily living.

A skilled nursing facility (SNF) may be a freestanding facility or part of a hospital that has been certified by Medicare to admit patients requiring subacute care and rehabilitation.
