Researchers at Brown University have found that the length of an average Medicare-certified hospice stay in a nursing home has doubled during the last 10 years. The study, which will appear in the August issue of The Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, evaluated hospice use in U.S. nursing homes between 1999 and 2006. It found the typical treatment time has increased from 46 to 93 days. The researchers cited a standard daily payment rate for most Medicare hospice enrollment days as an incentive for some of the longer stays.
Level 3 Communications, Inc. today announced that it has signed an agreement with the American Lung Association of the Midland States, a non-profit healthcare organization serving Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee, to provide dedicated Internet access and voice services in support of its mission to improve lung health awareness.
Several pediatric medical conditions, such as congenital heart disease, vascular compression, and congenital softening of the cartilage lining the trachea or bronchi, can compromise the airway and cause breathing difficulty.
IRIN reports on the issue of sexual violence against men as a "weapon of war" in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), writing, "Sexual violence against men, including rape, is under-reported, poorly addressed and has a severe impact on both men and their families, according to a presentation at the annual Sexual Violence and Research Initiative (SVRI), held in Cape Town, South Africa."
