There are few treatment options for children with multiple sclerosis-;a condition in which the immune system attacks the protective covering of nerves in the brain and spinal cord-;and most therapies for the disease have not been tested in children.
Nearly one-third of cases of Wilms tumor, a pediatric cancer of the kidney, are linked to a gene called Lin28, according to research from Boston Children's Hospital. Mice engineered to express Lin28 in their kidneys developed Wilms tumor, which regressed when Lin28 was withdrawn, indicating that strategies aimed at blocking or deactivating the gene hold therapeutic promise for children with Wilms.
A study based on medical records from more than a quarter million adult patients found that African-American patients with connective tissue diseases such as lupus or rheumatoid arthritis were twice as likely as white patients to suffer from narrowed or atherosclerotic blood vessels, which increase the risk of a heart attack, stroke or death.
Parkinson's disease, a severely degenerative disease of the brain leading to tremors, muscle rigidity and finally immobility was until the 1990's believed to be due to environmental factors, lifestyle and a person's age. However, now scientists have discovered five more genes that influence its development.
With a new $5.8 million, three-year award from the National Institutes of Health, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine will further develop a state-of-the-art, microfluidic 3D model system that mimics structure and function of the liver to better predict organ physiology, assess drug toxicity and build disease models.
