In a world first, Dr. Andres M. Lozano and his team at Toronto Western Hospital has shown using Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) on patients with early signs of Alzheimer's disease is safe and may help improve memory. The phase one safety trial of six Ontario patients took place from 2005 to 2008. All patients left hospital within 2 to 3 days of surgery, and continue to participate in regular follow-up cognitive assessments.
Speaking before the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) and the American Society for Nutritional Sciences, Dr. Lester M. Crawford, Acting Commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), today outlined the agency's science-based approach to protecting American consumers from unsafe dietary supplements.
Noting "hundreds of global health researchers, policymakers, civil society leaders, program managers, health practitioners, and newborn champions [are gathering] in Johannesburg, South Africa, this week at the Global Newborn Health Conference to discuss how to improve the poor statistics on newborn health," Gary Darmstadt, head of the Family Health Division of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Cyril Engmann, a senior program officer for neonatal health at the foundation, write in the organization's "Impatient Optimists" blog, "This collective analysis and effort should ensure that all aspects of newborn health are included in this plan."
MEDICREA announced today it has received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the PASS LP Iliac Fixation within the United States. This new Iliac Fixation supplements the PASS LP range, a ultra Low Profile Polyaxial Spine System launched recently.
