Wako Diagnostics, a division of Wako Chemicals USA, has received 510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the uTASWako i30 instrument with alpha-fetoprotein L3 (AFP-L3) and des-gamma-carboxy prothrombin (DCP) in vitro diagnostic (IVD) tests in the USA.
MRC scientists have discovered a mechanism that prevents cells from transforming into cancer cells. As cells age they enter a state called senescence, a kind of suspended animation that allows a cell to keep functioning but prevents it from changing. This state can also be triggered by what's called an 'insult' to the cell, for example a signal from a cancer-initiating gene.
Previous research has shown that patients without a consistent primary care physician (PCP) have worse outcomes than those who do, but little is known about why this is true. New research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) has brought to light the importance of the role of a primary care physician in a population of diabetes patients. Their findings are published in the December 10, 2012 issue of Diabetes Care.
