A National Cancer Institute (NCI) investigator's endorsement of inaccurate high-risk HPV test to refer women to cervical cancer tests, despite the weak evidence of its value, is "unfortunate and inappropriate."
Rates of anxiety and depression among college students in the U.S. have risen rapidly in the past decade. Students are showing up at college counseling centers only to discover they often must wait weeks and even months to see a mental health expert. In response, New Directions Behavioral Health® (New Directions) announced the launch of its Student Assistance Program to support and expand existing campus counseling services and resources.
Researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine have for the first time determined that the ketogenic diet, a specialized high-fat, low carbohydrate diet, may reverse impaired kidney function in people with Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. They also identified a previously unreported panel of genes associated with diabetes-related kidney failure, whose expression was reversed by the diet. The findings were published in the current issue of PLoS ONE.
Building upon previous research, scientists at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Veteran's Affairs San Diego Healthcare System report that neurons derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) and grafted into rats after a spinal cord injury produced cells with tens of thousands of axons extending virtually the entire length of the animals' central nervous system.
ImmunoCellular Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focused on the development of novel immune-based cancer therapies, today announced long-term data from a Phase I clinical trial of ICT-107, the Company's lead cancer vaccine candidate for the treatment of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and aggressive form of brain cancer.
