Oncology drug advertisements that ran in patient-focused cancer magazines presented the drugs' benefits differently - earlier in the advertisement text and in larger type size - than their side effects or risks, according to an analysis by researchers at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
The search for new medicinal molecules with predetermined properties is a rather complex, expensive and time-consuming process, especially in oncology.
A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published in the journal PLOS ONE shows that when colorectal cancer is targeted by the drug bevacizumab (Avastin), tumors may switch dependence from VEGF-A, which is targeted by the drug, to related growth factors in including VEGF-C, VEGF-D and placental growth factor.
Over 300,000 people die each year in the U.S. due to sudden cardiac death. In many cases, sudden cardiac death is caused by abnormally rapid heart rhythms called tachycardias, which means the heart cannot pump adequate blood to the body.
The study, which was conducted by the NHS' National Patient Safety Agency, analysed over a thousand cases where cancer had been misdiagnosed or indentified late over a 12-month period.
