Duke University Health System, Inc. and LifePoint Hospitals® have formed DLP Healthcare, LLC (Duke/LifePoint), a joint venture designed to strengthen and improve healthcare delivery throughout North Carolina and the surrounding regions by creating flexible affiliation options for community hospitals.
The so-called "memory drugs" used to treat Alzheimer's disease and other causes of dementia also ease or prevent a barrage of troublesome behaviors that affect the majority of patients, ultimately lightening the burden on caregivers, researchers have found. They report their results in the March issue of the American Journal of Psychiatry.
Scientists at The Wistar Institute have developed a mathematical method for classifying forms of glioblastoma, an aggressive and deadly type of brain cancer, through variations in the way these tumor cells "read" genes. Their system was capable of predicting the subclasses of glioblastoma tumors with 92 percent accuracy. With further testing, this system could enable physicians to accurately predict which forms of therapy would benefit their patients the most.
The trove of data has the potential to reveal faults in drug pricing, potential fraud and could help regulators and consumers track medical spending - but could take years to sort out.
A panel of markers have been discovered that helps identify if a person is pre-diabetic by measuring the fatty acids in their blood. This discovery by University of Hawai'i Cancer Center researchers may allow physicians to warn patients years before the onset of diabetes, therefore allowing them to change their lifestyle patterns potentially avoiding the diagnosis of a chronic disease.
