DUSA Pharmaceuticals, Inc. reported today that on the afternoon of August 5, 2010 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration notified DUSA that it has not granted Orphan Drug Designation for the use of Levulan (aminolevulinic acid HCl) Photodynamic Therapy for the prevention of cutaneous squamous cell carcinomas in patients who have a proven history of multiple localized cutaneous SCCs over a 12 month period.
Despite advances in cancer survival, more than 90 percent of people with pancreatic cancer die within five years. Most patients with pancreatic tumors (and half of those with colorectal cancers) carry a mutation in the KRAS gene, which normally controls cell growth and death.
Preemptive treatment for a nonviable pregnancy of unknown location—a situation in which there is a positive pregnancy test result but the location of the pregnancy cannot be confirmed within or outside the uterus with other diagnostic tests—resolves the condition more rapidly than treating symptoms as they arise, suggests a study supported by the National Institutes of Health.
Canada's prime minister must put the health of the world's citizens at the centre of discussions at the upcoming UN climate summit, according to Canadian health professionals. Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced last week that he will join world leaders at the historic meeting in Copenhagen in December.
