Controversy over the F.D.A.'s proposal to withdraw approval of Avastin for breast cancer treatment will reignite June 28-29 with a new round of hearings. One oncologist who will be monitoring the hearings is Dr. Frederick C. Tucker Jr. of Fredericksburg Oncology in Virginia, whose recent New York Times op ed defended the F.D.A.'s position on scientific grounds.
Pharmacyclics, Inc. today announced data from three Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia presentations at the American Society of Hematology Annual Meeting describing the Btk-selective inhibitor PCI-32765. Two presentations report preclinical data, and one presentation reports clinical data from a pooled analysis of 54 patients with CLL or Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma treated with PCI-32765.
To more efficiently treat breast cancer, scientists have been researching molecules that selectively bind to cancer cells and deliver a substance that can kill the tumor cells, for several years. Researchers from the University and University Hospital Basel have now for the first time successfully combined such an antibody-drug conjugate with a therapy that stimulates the immune system to attack tumor cells.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences has awarded the University of Iowa Superfund Research Program (isrp) a five-year, $16 million grant to study the health effects of environmental pollutants, especially polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) found in water, former industrial sites and the atmosphere.
